Fishing Report

Apr 10, 2024 | Andy Jenkins fishing-rod-5372267_1280.jpg

Its Spring time here in Eastern Idaho which means it could be 55 degrees one day or blowing and drifting snow the next. Just like the different weather patterns we get this time of the year the Henrys Fork fishes that way. One day you could have a good amount of Midges and BWO’s, and the next day nothing. Those that fish here this time of the year are used to that but that’s why they call it fishing right? On the bright side the snow pack is at 103% of average, and Island Park Reservoir is at 92% of capacity. Hopefully, we can keep the temps moderate, some good spring rain, and a gradual snow melt, and the upcoming fishing season will be a great one.

News from the river have been mixed. Like I said above one day is great the next is a bust try to fish the peak temps of the day with good cloud cover if possible and you should be fairly successful. Remember to give us a call at the shop and or come in and we will assist you and give you advice for your day of fishing.

Here is your fishing report:

Box Canyon

The Box is flowing at a flow of 452 out of IP Reservoir. The access is still snow covered but you can walk or snow shoe in. Wading in the box should not be a problem with these flows. Nymphing is the name of the game this time of year. I would have Zebra Midges in red, green, and black size 16 and 18. Bullet Quills green and black size 14 and 16. Pats Rubber Legs size 10. Bring some Griffiths Gnat and a size 16 Tilt Wing BWO, because you never know when you will see some heads.

Harriman State Park

Closed to fishing until June 15.

Warm River to Ashton

Getting into this boat ramp is still a challenge, but the access at Jump Off, and the County Boat Ramp are open. In this stretch Its mainly a Dry Drop and or Nymphing game. I would fish the slower drop offs and really work the run. Chubby’s size 8 in red or purple. Zebra Midges red and green size 16. Flashback PT’s size 16. Electric Caddis size 16, and Pats Rubber Legs size 8 and 10. I wouldn’t hesitate to throw a streamer like a Copper Zonker or a Barley Legal, remember slow strips through the deeper pools and steep banks.

Ashton to St Anthony

All boat ramps are open but that doesn’t mean that the roads in are all safe. Drive slow, there are a lot of potholes. Most of these stretches are fishing good. You can nymph, streamer and dry fly fish all in the same stretch. Nymphing I would have the usuals, Pats Rubber Legs size 8 and 10, Zebra Midges red, green and black size 16 and 18, Cocktail nymph size 16 and 18, PT’s size 16, and Electric Caddis size 16. For streamers I would have Mikes Woolhead Sculpin in black and olive size 4, Barley Legal Olive and white size 4, Rusty Trombone olive size 4, and a Goldie white size 4. For the Dries I would have some Tilt Wing BWO size 16, No Hackle BWO size 16, and a Last Chance Cripple BWO size 16 and 18. Remember the BWO’s in the spring are much bigger than the one that are in the fall so using a size 16 is very common. Also, in this section of the river all the way to saint Anthony there is a lot of public access. Please! Park in the designated parking areas and please obey all trespassing signs.

We here at Henrys Fork Anglers are looking forward to seeing all of you on the river and in the shop. Please remember to get your 2024 fishing license, and your 2024 Invasive Species Sticker for your boat. The March Browns and Mother’s Day Caddis are right around the corner.
